Supervision and Training for Breastfeeding Supporters and Birth Workers

What is Supervision?

Supervision is a reflective practice comprising elements of both self-care and professional development.

The self-care element involves:

·       being aware of what depletes you and what restores you

·       bringing compassion to yourself in your work

·       valuing yourself as an IBCLC

·       avoiding burn-out and compassion fatigue

The professional development element includes:

·       learning and progressing in your practice as an IBCLC or birth worker, no matter how experienced you are

·       being aware of your own scope of practice in your role and reflecting on your work in that context

·       staying up-to-date with new and emerging research, guidance and knowledge

·       curating and managing your own learning needs, CPD and CERPS/re-registration requirements

Supervision can allow us to maintain our professional competence, showing ourselves and our clients respect and compassion. This allows for the safety of our clients, our colleagues and ourselves.

“I suffer with generalised anxiety which in the past has led me to be both self-critical and sensitive to ‘criticism’. Through supervision, Jill has both boosted my confidence in my own abilities and helped me enhance my skills as a reflective practitioner as she is so good at balancing encouragement and support with appropriate, respectful challenge.”
